What are the reasons why strategic therapy fails? Can they be due to the therapist?
Answer
The reasons for the failure of a psychotherapy are diverse and are not easy to identify. The failure can be linked to some difficulties on the side of the therapist (not selecting the most appropriate interventions for the disorder, or not establishing the appropriate relationship with their patient). Similarly, the patient may not be well matched or tuned into the therapist and may experience difficulties to follow a therapy that uses prescriptions and exercises like strategic therapy. In any case, it may be possible to realize improvements by changing to another therapist who uses the strategic approach. In other cases, it could be more productive to change the approach. In the face of difficulties, it’s the therapist’s duty to help his patient to analyze in detail the reasons that brought the therapy to an unsuccessful state and provide the patient information on other strategic therapists or other psychotherapeutic approaches that could present a valid treatment alternative.
